Evaluation

Throughout the project we tried to use, develop and challenge typical forms and conventions of real media products. We did this using both research into similar media texts, and by investigating and expanding on already existing conventions of posters, magazines, and teaser trailers.
In our teaser trailer we used common conventions from trailers such as "Law abiding citizen" and its use of revenge displayed through its themes and narrative. A similar form that this trailer displays is used and then developed in our very own trailer. The inevitable twist from happiness to sad/anger is displayed at the start but make makes the audience aware of this, despite the happy and comfortable images being portrayed, because of the mysterious and tension building music. We tried to expand uppon this and challenge this common technique by using a heavy contrast of both happy images and music. This allows for a much bigger and sudden twist in the storyline as the audience watches it.

Similar to "Law abiding citizen" the opening shots are long and enticing, drawing the audience in and making them feel comfortable. We applied this technique and then challenged them by using fast past cutting and flash lighting effects that added to the power and quickness of the developing storyline, captivating the idea of anger and "Reprisal".

An important convention of our trailer was how we used character positioning in the screen shot. The very opening shot (top of page) replicates this idea, with both main characters just off center with the sun between in the center dividing them, and this shows the equality of the characters. In addition, there is a shot within the trailer staring the main Character playing the attacker (Jack) and the victim (Parry). We purposely placed the victim in the center of the shot but far away towards the back of the room which diminished his power over the attacker who then walk straight into the center of the shot displaying his power over his victim. These camera conventions challenge already existing teaser trailers, and allow the audience to clearly distinguish the relationships between the characters.

Another key factor we used was clothing. The effect of clothing in such a short trailer like"Reprisal" is very important. The original clothing worn by the main character Jack at the start of the trailer was light and casual, but by the end the clothing changed to a dark hoodie indicating a change in the characters mood. The hoodie was effective in reflecting upon the theme of revenge and anger. Overmore, the significance of the original attackers clothing of a hoodie and a tracksuit gives away an initial negative view, in partnership with the change of music.

The trailer "44 inch chest" uses brilliant use of location to create dramatic effect of its theme. In order to compete or challenge existing films the filming of the "Reprisal" and its theme of revenge meant that we would have to find a location that would reflect and emphasize the working title. And we succeeded in finding a location that did just just that.

Our ancillary texts also involved used familiar conventions of existing posters and magazine's. The two texts includes the common features of a film advertisement like main title, quotes image, main stars it features, subtitles, price, producer logo and website information. Going along with the theme of "Reprisal" we decided to use contrasting colors such as reds, blacks and whites. Many advertisement companies when promoting films use these colors as they both fit well together and fit with the contrasting theme's of happiness and anger. These two posters are perfect examples of color schemes in relation to their themes. These conventions were used and developed in both our ancillary texts.

The Combination our main text and two ancillary texts I think is very effective. From cross media theories I have learnt that the color scheme displayed through out product, in this case red and black, allows for audiences to link the products together as they all follow the same color theme. Reflection of one media text into another allows audiences to pick up and recognize these elements of a product or company through cross media, a perfect example of this would be "Avatar" and its theme of blue, which instantly makes a connection between the public and their product as its such a recognizable sign linking straight to Avatar as a product. The combination of our products and their unique aesthetics of advertisement would be very effective if released into the media.

From audience feed back we have gathered that the elements most favored in the trailer was the lighting effects and the way the music really fitted into the whole genre of the trailer. In addition the structure, tempo and climax of the music was favored, "The music really extenuates that part" was a quote about the music effects.

From audience response their could also be some obvious improvements. We gathered that the storyline could be more specific and clear, however the feedback also suggested that the shortness of the trailer good be a good element as it could leave the audience in suspense. Furthermore, we gathered that the text included at the end of the trailer could be improved by using more effective and professional looking text.

Overall, we gathered that the audience's response to "Reprisal" was very good and positive, with acceptation of minor improvements such as text and a broader storyline.

Before creating my media products I had never used either iMovie and had barely touched Photoshop, so they were both alien to me. Throughout the making of my three products I learned a great deal from both. I think that I really got to grips with both softwares and within a few days it became quite simple. From the start of the process with Photoshop I started with simple layering, and then advanced onto multiple layering and then detail and effects. With iMovie I started with the basic cutting of the
footage and placing the right frames along the timeline. I then progressed to more advanced conventions such as lighting effects and intense time cutting. The part which I enjoyed the most was the adding and editing of music. I was originally going to use one piece of music but then decided to use two for a more dramatic effect. The most important element of this production was the timing of editing with the music. I worked hard on perfecting this and i even added some flash lighting effects to stress and emphasize the beat of the music. This payed off as we discovered that the part of the trailer most favored was indeed the connection between the beat of the music and the footage.

Responces

Trailer: These are two responses to the our trailer, "Reprisal". The first was an individual response and the second was a small focus group. The questions were, do you think its up to professional standard, what was your favorite part of the trailer, if I was do do again what would should i improve upon and what genre did you think the trailer was.

">>
These are the questionnaires i created to gather response on my "Reprisal" poster and and "Film Now" magazine cover.
From theses responses I gathered that most favored part of both ancillary was the color scheme, "I like the way the color all links together through both texts and in the same style". The audience also suggested that they like the "Professional standard of the poster". The audience seemed to like this because of the conventions of official advertisement such as "production logos" and "website linking directly to the company or producers". Overall the audience seemed to respond well to all three of our products advertising "Reprisal" and the all three products seemed to link well together to create a thorough advertisement for the product "Reprisal".

Costume Sketches

These are the costume sketches for each character of the teaser trailer. I have tried to create costumes that reflect both the themes and mood of the scene as well as the personality and role of the different characters. And the main idea here is to create contrast between the two types of characters in the trailer through thier image and choice of clothing.

Script

This teaser trailer is based on two contrasting scenes which acts as the twist in the storyline. The first scene is a big contrast to the second with the duality of good and bad, and happy and sad/angry.

Scene 1

Two people, boyfriend and girlfriend that are holding hands and walking through a field, in an environment of trees and more fields. It is near sun set so the sky is likely to be very light with elements of orange, to resememble safety and happiness. Nothing startling. They both walk very slowly. The camera angle is a low and the music is introduced. The music is happy and shows no idea of fear or tension.

The next image will be of the two charcters embracing under bed sheets and then quoting "I love you" (Girl) with a reply from the boy "I love you too". They then smile and close their eyes to show there comfort and peace together.

The next shot resumes the flow of happiness of the two charcers. The boy places a camera excitedly on a cuboard in a bathroom. The lighting in the bathroom is light and it holds the typical elements of a bathroom, including a shower, sinks and towels. The camera angle is at eye height and is staionary. The camera angle then changes to a reverse angle of the previous shot. This shows the boy walking back towards the girl after applying the self timer to the camera. The third and final shot of this section is a close up of the camera focusing on its flashing light (self timer) which runs onto the second scene and major twist in the trailer.

Scene 2

The flashing and beeping of the camera then runs onto the same diegetic sound of a hospital support machine revealing the that something bad is or has happening. The next shot reveals the problem with the girl who gets attacked.
The visual is of a dark alley or street with very little light source. The camera angle is at eye height and is in mid shot whilst panning, following the character around a corner with the view of three hooded people (male) in the long shot. The next image is the result of the problem, she is seen falling to the ground in a close up shot, the camera on the floor and then the girl falling into the shot, her head tilted slightly towards the camera, with the hooded characters casually walking away laughing. There is then a reverse image showing the girl being left by the attackers.

The next thing we see is the boy casually picking up the phone and receives the news that his girlfriend has been stabbed by a gang of youths, and that she is luckily in a stable position. The camera angle is lowered to almost floor level and the boy falls into the shot sliding down the wall after dropping the phone. His facial expression then progressively changes from shock to sadness to anger. Each heavy sound beat (which is very clear and distinctive) shows his reflection of their memories and also the disturbing images of her being attacked. These images pop up very quickly overlapping the outline of the boys face.
The boy then runs out of the room in rage, camera panning with him. He then goes to capture the main attacker (he finds out where he is or who he is) and the camera now has the effect of it being held while running, and the suspect is jumped on and some kind of thick bag is thrown onto his head. The suspect is then dragged to a quickly to the floor or into a car and taken to the torture location. The camera is panning again as it traces the movement of the vehicle.
The next shot is of an abandoned house, the insides dirty and dark, and there is a single old chair is the centre of the room. The suspect is thrown into the room, by the boy and ties him to the chair. The lighting is very low and from one source and direction. The boy is now the non-diegetic voice over, he states "Revenge has no more quenching effect on emotions than salt water has on wounds". The Boys says this right next to the suspects face in a close up shot both facing towards the camera.
The torturing begins, the suspect is seen being hit but through the eyes of the camera (camera acting as suspect). He is punched repeatedly and on the last beat of the music to end the trailer the head bag is removed almost revealing his face before the screen turns blank.

Deadline

  • My initial ideas for my teasure trailer was an action packed, revenge film, that reflects upon some of today's modern problems throughout our culture.
  • The initial genre of the trailer was based around an action, with a class of cultures or people.
  • In terms of music, my origional ideas were based on a powerful collection and contrast of music that reflected upon major elements of the film that would really get the audience emotionally involved. I intended upon several different styles of music to reflect the different emotions being portrayed through the trailer, which will be inflicted onto the audince with dramatic effect. There will be a lot of powerful non-Diegetic sound with little pockets of voice overs throughout the trailer to give the audience a deeper insight to the content and narrative of the origional film.
  • My intended audience would of been the young adult or teenager.
  • The format that I origioanlly planned to produce was in a digital format. The editing process will be done on the latest technology on iMac softwere.
  • My time limit for the trailer will run somewhere between 30 and 90 seconds.
  • Fesibility will be recorded at the later stages of the production schedule, when looking at locations and formats, and how easy everything is to access in reality. Contacts will be recoreded that could influence my product, and there are many different types of contacts that could help or influence my teasure trailer.
  • My initial thoughts on a name for the trailer, was a name that covered a lot of topics in todays society that covered the synomyms of passion and revenge.
  • The theme's and styles of this film include passion, revenge, anger, violence and love.
  • How is it rationale? It will cover an aspect that everyone will recognise and will gather thier intrests through emphasis of a particular aspect or subject matter.
  • My deadline is 26th of Febuary.

My initial ideas for the plot of the teaser trailer were a series of criminal events that included revenge on someone or a group of people. This could be due to an attack or violent act against the main charcters wife/girlfriend or family. It could even result in death. This creates the revenge action theme, that also runs into a passionate sub genre.

Ice Age's Blue Sky Studios

What is Blue Sky Studios?

Academy Award® winning Blue Sky Studios became a wholly owned unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment in 1997 (a subsidiary of News Corporation). The studio was founded ten years earlier with a mission to pioneer creatively superior photo-realistic, high-resolution, computer-generated character animation for the feature film, television and entertainment industries.

More info in following link...http://blueskystudios.com/content/company.

How do they work?

During the process of making an animation the company goes through several stages of production and design:
  1. Story
  2. Art
  3. Modeling
  4. Rigging
  5. Materials
  6. Layout
  7. Animation
  8. Lighting
  9. Effects
  10. Rendering
  11. Paint
  12. Editorial
  13. R & D (Research and Development)
  14. Systems
What else do they do?

Much like a lot of other media production or distribution companies, they tend to release further material based on their based text, and what Blue Sky Studios have done is create a number of ancillary texts to either promote their product even further or to promote the company in terms of audience interaction with their material. These includes short animated films suitably called Shorts.

Due to their success in the film animation industry, they have worked with several other big production companies such as, Paramount, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros.

Teaser Trailer analysis (Ice Age)

Here is the trailer for Ice Age, with the analysis in detail below.

The opening shot features the first introduction to one of the characters and instantly flows into the theme of comedy because its CGI unique expressions. Also they way in which the character struggles and emphasizes its motion forms a comedic image within the first few seconds of the trailer.
In terms of camera shots and techniques in the opening scene, the camera is panning along a snow covered landscape, setting the theme in terms of environment and surroundings. A very effective camera shot is then used to emphasize the struggle of the character. As the camera shot and angle is stationary it shows the constant movement and strain of the animated character from reaching its goal, positioned on the far left of the shot.
Through the continuation of the of the trailer the camera shots expand on revealing more knowledge of the film. There is a key camera technique about half way through the trailer, which starts with a close up of the characters face, which then zooms out to reveal the problematic twist unknown to the character at that moment, and the third and final shot is a high angle, stationary shot looking down on through the ice where the character has disappeared, to reveal and follow the journey of the animal.
There is repetition of the revealing shot, and is used agin at the end of the trailer where the camera shot, which is focused on the character, reveals the environment around it which automatically, introduces a second character and link to the title of the film.

The editing pace and technique currently is slow, until the second half of the trailer where the editing pace quickens, reflective of the narrative and high speed movement of the character falling from the broken ice above. The editing shot then slows right down towards the end with the introduction of the second character which causes suspense and tension, leaving the audience on a definite cliff hanger.

Even though there is no music in the entire teaser trailer, the diegetic sound is still very effective. Essentially all we here is the landscape noise and a reaction from two characters, and without any dialogue still reveals a lot of aspects of what is to come in the official movie. This is only effective however if the audience have some knowledge of the previous theme and storyline of the previous Ice Age movie.
At the very end of the trailer the only text jumps in informing us of the title of the film, the 3D experience that the viewer can enjoy and the release date. The release date of the film, just like Avatar, is a key form of persuasive information, that is essential to thoroughly attracting mass audiences.

Ice age Case Study (poster analysis)

The other film I have chosen to research is Ice Age created by Blue Sky studios. Although it may be in the same theme of animation, there is a clear and present different target audience of a younger generation.

Here are some useful medium from the Ice age trilogy.

This picture is great in revealing its identity and theme of film. The obvious comedic theme, due to its expressions of the CGI (Computer Generated Images ) characters, as well as its soft tone that compliments the rounded cartoon bubble style text of the title, help create an image that although looks quite scary and intimidating, humorous and attractive toward the younger generation.

The white space (negative space) behind the main focus of the image (the characters), as reflected upon in the research in the page layout and design, emphasises the focus of the advertisement making the animals, incredibly isolated and helps from keeping the picture from looking too overcrowded.

The text included in the shot, is the title of the film and the release date, below the names of the main vocal actors staring in the film. The title of the film, especially the sub-title, 'Dawn of the Dinosaurs' itself is almost seen in a comedic way as the image shows a clear stereotype of the dinosaurs, with the reflection that they are dangerous and threatening, which is true, but has a big contrast to the other characters who are seen in a more optimistic light, as individually creates characters, produced by Ice Age's production/Design team.

Applying theory to an audience (Avatar)

In media studies audience refers to the groups and individuals addressed and often partly constructed by media industries. Research into audiences has been far from straight forward, and different models tend to get very different kinds of funding. However, two extremes tend to recur in a set of fascinating arguments: the effects model and the Uses and gratifications model.
(Branston, Gill and Stafford, Ray - Title of journal, The media students book, third edition - Date of publication 2003 by Routledge - Title of article 'Ways of thinking about audiences' chapter 6 'Audiences, pg. 148 -154 - Date of access 01/17/10)

Firstly, applying the effects model, also known as the hypodermic model to a film production such as James Cameron's Avatar. This requires looking at the mass media and mass communications that emphasizes the scale of its operation through advertising. Then i can look at theories that could be applied to analyze its audience structure.

Here is an example of how Avatar is being drilled into the audience, reinforcing its image across popular websites and links to make the product clearly recognizable.
...the high ranking and famous sites are very often indexed making them very viable for advertising your site both in the avatar and the signature. (Author, Paranoid87- published 5/31/2007, date of access 01/17/10 - Title of page, Avatar Advertising) (1)

"It may appear to be a bit much to assume that one film could influence the destiny of humanity, but Avatar has the advertising publicity befitting a film that cost approximately $237 million to make, along with its new filming and presentation techniques which have already established its status in cinematic history." Interview with James Cameron and 'Centuari Dreams'. This outlines Avatars support in the effects model through advertisement, in relation to incredible popularity.(2) (Author, Unknown - Title of page, Avatar-Film Making and Human Destiny - Date of publication (01/15/10) Date of access, (01/17/10)

Below is a clear representation of Avatars popularity through cross media and a variation of advertisement and marketing, used to captivate mass audiences by a "powerful syringe". Also as part of the effects model, below, shows how the company targets 'the weaker members of society', in this case children.
The studio teamed with Coke Zero and McDonald's for extensive promotions that gave fans access to the virtual augmented-reality world of Pandora. Consumers could download an AR application from AVTR.com and scan their Coke Zero can or 12-pack to take a virtual ride in the Samson helicopter featured in the film. McDonald's took a similar approach with its Happy Meal and Big Mac tie-ins, creating a virtual "Avatar" space called McWorld, where fans could interact with other aspects of the Pandora environment. Both marketers had large-scale media buys to promote the tie-ins, including general-market TV buys from Coke and multicultural TV, print and radio ads from McDonald's. LG and Panasonic pitched in for global tie-ins to cross-promote products with similar 3-D innovations, while Mattel partnered on the toy merchandising front. (3)
Author, Hampp Andrew, - Title page, Avatar soars of Fat Ad spending, Mass Marketing - Date of publication 01/04/10 - Date of access, 01/17/10

Secondly, applying uses and gratifications to Avatars audience, and looking more into the individual interests of consumers.

This study explores both the effects of avatar presence and customization on users’ attitudes toward social networking sites, as well as embedded Ad and PSA, (Public Service Ad). Based on ‘implicit egotism’ that human beings inherently “gravitate toward things that resemble the self” (p. 800), this study predicted that avatar users might have positive attitude toward their ‘self-resembled creature (i.e., avatar)’, and in turn, the positive affect is transferred to the evaluation of website and ads. Furthermore, this study found that avatar successfully increases self-awareness observing virtual self, and highlights the concept of self-preservation when encountering a message regarding a threat to one’s survival. Finally, this study firstly attempted to examine the effects of customization in the context of avatars and psychological mechanisms in order to connect their associations. (4)

Definition of a trailer: a series of short extracts from a film, used to advertise it in a cinema or on television.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/trailer Date of access 01/15/10, Date of Publication 2003, Author Unknown.

Trailers can be very useful and helpful in advertising upcoming movies, however they dont come without their advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side they can have great action, solid acting, interesting ideas and fast-past action. However, on the the hand they can be silly, slightly predictable, indifferent acting and a little over the top. Therefore, it is important to research into my initial ideas or other trailers and gather audience feedback to make sure I produce a trailer that has no negative aspects and really captivates the audience.
Their role in the film industry is vitally important in promoting a new film to mass audiences and this is done by a process of saturation release by huge P&A (Print and advertising) company. These companies are so big that they can target at least 1 out of 2 multiplexes in a single city. However, these results can only be expected if the film has the potential of grossing over $100 million, with a $10-$15 million release cost. Therefore this process has the potential to reach mass audiences and gain the population of a huge number of cities around the world that are looking directly at your product. And with this concentration of audience comes the ideal situation to advertise an new film. This is an even bigger process for the USA as their companies rely mostly on "Bums on seats" and success of DVD and merchandise.

This very strong force of money and advertisement from Hollywood and the rest of the USA forces the British film industry in a 'Bottleneck' system that does unfortunately prevents them from making more serious films that represent Britain in a more realistic and important perspective. And in overall terms of collective identity, its about style of content.

New Media being used (Avatar)

Part of the reason for the existence and popularity of James Cameron's Avatar is because of its break through in the film industry for special effects and graphics. Picsci.com tells us that Cameron uses the latest technology Liquid Metal T 1000, Fusion camera system and an LCD Virtual Camera, which can render the virtual world of 3D.

James Cameron Talking to John Scott Lewinski: "My goal was to tell an epic story with visual power and to impress the crap out of the audience, like my goal is every time I make a movie. When it comes to the science behind the camera, what it took to produce the images—I think the viewer likes the idea that they’re being shown something new, but I don’t think they really care how you did it." This doesn't come as a surprise when you look at he's price tag on production; a cool $500 Million.

http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2009-12/feature-3-d-revolution

Due to the very low production budget and most probably based on college and home equipment, my media usage will be limited and i will be working with media such as Fireworks, Photoshop and publisher.

Selling audience - Target audience (Avatar)

This is James Cameron talking about the target audience for Avatar, and he describles that the range of audience could go from "eight to eighty" his reason for this was the shere quantity of money he spent on the blockbuster including a production image that would captivate all audiences. However, he also went on to say that its not for people under eight years old as its not a "Pixar" animation.
Watch CBS News Videos Online
On the right are the latest viewer ratings and audience feedback from IMBd. It shows that from a survey from just under 160,000 viewers 136,492 were male and only 22,017 female. Therefore the results show that the clear realistic targe audience for Avatar are males with the most viewings going to the age group 18-29.

One of the ways that I can direct my product at a certain audience group is by producing a supplement of the product, a group of ideas or a story board and then absorbing the feedback from a panel of people or some kind of focus group. This will give me a substancial amount of evidence to support my idea of a target audience.
As well as this i could look at other media products
that hold a strong resemblance to the theme and genre of my initial ideas and base the target audience of this.

Looking at new cinema releases over the past few months, it is obvious that some films carry elements that you would automatically associate with certain age groups, for example "Paranormal activity", is seen as an adult film due to its publication through cross media seen as scary with quotes from radio and teasure trailers such as "a chilling surprise" (*L.A Times) and "A Horror surprise" (*Time). Quotes like this are essential for gaining intrest in a certain audience group.

Case study on Avatar - Identity over cross media

Why are the Na'vi blue? James Cameron answered the question in a recent interview saying he wanted there be an "otherness" to the love story between Sully's avatar and the native alien, Neytiri. Since skin color is "such a big issue on our planet," Cameron decided to use that issue as a thematic driving point. Other skin tones were already taken by humans, while green was already a cliché in other alien movies. "We had big blue women, not little green men," Cameron said. No word on why the Na'vi's skin sparkles, but you have to admit it is a cool effect.

Here i am representing identity through several cross medias.
The unmistakable identity of Avatar is one of the highest recognizable products because of its
advertisement through several cross medias each linking to the theme of the film. Firstly the trailer for Avatar
carries several clear examples of its identity through elements such as music, text, video, and image.
The text of the title that has its own own unique font and clear blue theme running through, which can
be found and recognized through other medias such as the Internet on the official Avatar website, and
blogs on the subject of the film.
The success of James Cameron's career has resulted in his name being a recognizable figure of the
film industry, and his name through several cross medias is one of the most important factors in
recognizing the identity of Avatar, whether it being on the radio or television, or any form of media.
